Nine Straight But Not All is Well in NY

Joba Chamberlain was set to start against the Orioles in the series finale against Adam Eaton.  Joba’s outing was definitely shorter than he expected it to be.

Joba’s and Aubrey Huff’s fist pumping debate was the least of Joba’s problems.  After striking out Brian Roberts, Adam Jones, who has been hot at the plate, came up to bat.  He hit a sharp liner back to the mound.  It hit off Joba’s leg right above his knee.  He recovered and got the ball to first for the out.  After the play, Joba bent over in pain as he tried to shake it off.  He stayed in the game until a double by Aubrey Huff got him taken out of the game.  Ironic, huh?  When he was going to back up the play, he was in obvious pain as he ran with a limp.  Girardi took him out of the game so that he wouldn’t be hurt anymore.

The x-rays on Joba’s knee came back negative, so that’s good news.  The soreness in his knee isn’t anything too serious so there is nothing to worry about.  He might be out of action until the soreness goes down, but he should be back soon.

CanoOn another note, the Yanks continued their winning streak and got their ninth win in a row.  Robby Cano had a big game offensively.  He went 3-4 with a two run homer, a double, and a single.  He was a triple short of the cycle.  He had three total RBI’s.  He scored two runs.  And he ultimately led this offense to the victory.  But Cano wasn’t the only player to have a good game at the plate.  Big Tex went 2-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk.  Melky went 1-4 with two RBI’s.  The only players not to get a hit were A-Rod, who was extremely silent in the game, Francisco Cervelli, and Brett Gardner.

The bullpen had to come in very early to replace Joba.  When I learned of this, I was hoping so much that they would be able to continue to play well and keep the O’s at bay.  They did exactly that.  Alfredo Aceves was the first to come in.  He has been the most consistent and successful pitcher out of the ‘pen during this streak.  Really all this season.  He pitched great.  3.1 innings giving up three hits, a walk, and striking out one.  He got the win in the game.

When Aceves came out, Jonathon Albaladejo came in.  After a relatively good start to the season, Albaladejo has had some problems of late.  Yesterday was a good example of this.  He went 2.1 innings giving up five hits, two for homers (Roberts, Markakis), and gave up four runs.  This is all the O’s would get but nontheless, it was a disappointing performance from Albaladejo.  On the bright side of things, he did strike out two.

Jose VerasJose Veras relieved Albaladejo and went 1.2 innings giving up only two hits.  Nothing else.  Veras is starting to come around in the bullpen and it has and will be huge if he can continue to pitch like this.

Rivera came in after Veras to close out the game.  He did it in perfect fashion giving up nothing and taking down one guy by way of the K.  Rivera’s ninth save of the season comes in the Yankees’ ninth win in a row.  Interesting.

Joba’s injury is obvioulsy a concern but the good thing is that he won’t be out for too long.  We have to keep an eye on it but there isn’t too much to worry about.

The Red Sox completed their sweep of the Jays which helped us immensely.  We are now only 1.5 games back of first.  We are 1 game behind the Sox.  This winning streak has been huge for the team and has gotten us well into the race for the top of the AL East.  Let’s keep it up.

yankees phillies

Interleague play starts today.  We are set to play the defending champs Phillies.  The Philles have been playing some good ball of late so it should be a good matchup.  The Yanks look to continue their streak and I look to continue enjoying Yankees baseball.  It’s so much easier rooting for a team that wins a lot than doing so for a team that loses a lot (like the Nats).  But just so you all know, the Nats did beat the Pirates yesterday.

It’s gonna be Burnett vs. Brett Myers in the interleague opener.  Burnett has looked good and hopefully he can keep it up.  We need a good performance from him against the powerful Phillis offense.

Eight Straight

Eight BallEight Straight, that’s the magical phrase going through my mind right now.  The Yanks got their eighth straight win last night with a win over the O’s, 11-4.  Robby Cano was one of three who went deep in a row during last night’s game.  More on that later.  Phil Hughes got back into his rythem on the mound.  He struck out nine in five innings.  And once again, as I’ve been saying every day during this streak, the Yanks are just playing all around great baseball.

In the second inning, Jeremy Guthrie tried to keep the Yanks’ offense at bay after allowing one run in the bottom of the first.  Obviously, that idea didn’t work out too well for him.  Sorry Guthrie.  The Yanks hit back to back to back jacks.

Nick Swisher

Cano

Melky Cabrera

Man the stadium must have been going wild.  I would if I was there.  Nick Swisher was the first to take one for a ride.  Robby Cano hit one after him and Melky hit another after Cano.  The stands were full of action and applause for the Yanks as they took a 4-1 lead.  They definitely had something to be proud of.

Some more offense came from Tex and Jeter who both doubled.  Kevin Cash also pitched in, despite going 0 for 3, with an RBI.

The pitching looked good.  Phil Hughes, after a couple so-so starts, definitely had it going.  He had a dominant fastball which seemed to leave the O’s offense dumbfounded.  He stuck out nine in his five inning performance.  He only gave up six hits, two on homers, and one walk.  I would have liked it if Hughes could’ve gone an inning or two more, but we’ll take what we got since we still won the game.  Alfredo Aceves continued his masterful pitching going two innings allowing two hits and getting two guys down by way of the K.  Phil Coke kept in stride with .2 of an inning worth of work giving up one hit and walking none.  Mariano Rivera came in to close things out a little earlier than usual, but not extremely rare.  He came in for the four out save.  He got it despite giving up a homer to Adam Jones.

The Yankees winning streak is now at eight and is hopefully not stopping soon.  I am going to continue to say that the Yanks have the capability of going on a ten game winning streak, or even longer.  They have the offense, they have the defense, and the pitching is starting to come around fully.  With all the weapons we have, I should expect nothing less of them right now than to play well.

Tex has been on fire lately.  Alfredo Aceves had been a big help in the ‘pen.  CC has picked it up in front of the home crowd.  The managing and coaching has been great.  Let’s keep it up.  We’re still moving up in the standings and that’s what we need.

Go Yanks!

King Of Bronx

Bronx

The King of Queens Bronx.  That’s right.  The Yanks are the King of the Bronx.  The Yankees extended their winning streak to seven games.  A-Rod and Teixeira both went yard.  CC pitched a gem.  And the Yanks just keep rolling along.

CC

CC took the bump against rookie O’s pitcher Brad Bergesson.  Both teams jumped on the opposing pitcher early.  The O’s started off the game with one run in the first.  Then the Yanks took the lead on a two run homer by A-Rod in the bottom of the inning.  The game then went scoreless until the seventh when the Yanks exploded for seven runs off a combined force of Bergesen, Chris Ray, and Mark Hendrickson.  By this point, the game was clearly over.  The Yanks continue their offensive hot streak and the pitching continues to be stellar.  The winning streak is now seven and it doesn’t look like it’s gonna be stopping any time soon.  The Yanks are on fire and are now starting to look like the Yankees everyone expected they would be at the beginning of the season.

Brian Bruney

Now, when you thought the Yanks were on fire and couldn’t get any better, you realize they have a ton of guys on the DL.  One of those guys was Brian Bruney who the Yanks just reactivated.  This makes the road to Rivera so much easier.  Bruney has proven to be the best and most reliable reliever, other than Rivera, in the ‘pen since Joba left to the starting rotation.  When we lost him to the DL, everyone thought the bullpen was going to be in terrible trouble.  Well, we were right, but that was before.  Now we have Bruney back and he will ultimately help our team.

The emergence of Francisco Cervelli has been equally huge.  With Posada and Molina on the DL, we have a youngster that has been able to fill in and do a respectable great job.  Cervelli has been solid behind the plate so far since being called up and his bat has been a huge bonus no one expected to be here.  I’ll take great D behind the plate AND good offense any day.  It’s a huge bonus and it’s just another weapon the Yanks have in this all of a sudden hot offense.

We play two more agaisnt Baltimore before interleague play starts and we play the defending champs, the Phillies.  We’ve got Phil Hughes tonight against the O’s ace, Jeremy Guthrie.

The Yanks are still moving up in the standings.  Our record is 22-17 and we are only 3.5 games back of the Jays.  Yesterday, the Red Sox beat the Jays 2-1.  This helps the Yanks because the Jays’ lead over both teams is shortened.  If the Sox continue to beat the Jays, the Jays will only lead by a couple games at the end of the series.  With the way the Yanks have been playing, they should have no problem keeping up now that we have gotten into the race again.

Go Yanks… and Red Sox (ughhh I hate saying that).

-Dillon

Where Did He Come From?

Mark Teixeira was the biggest offensive free agent out on the market over the off-season.  With the enormous payroll the Yanks have, they were able to reel him in.  At the beginning of this season, he started off playing at an average pace.  He wasn’t having any huge games and wasn’t putting up big numbers that he had in the past.  But, recently, it’s been a much different story.

The Yanks are currently in the middle of a six game winning streak.  Many people may call it a fluke, but really, the Yanks are more than capable of going on a six game winning streak.  I am predicting this streak will go on for more than six games.  One of the biggest offensive helpers during this streak has been Mark Teixeira who has all of a sudden come alive offensively.  He had already been there defensively maintaining his gold glove defensive play, but his offensive presence hasn’t been there at all.  Two homers, one from each side of the plate, last night assured us that he may have finally found his swing.  Over the course of this winning streak, he has played well and yesterday’s game was kind of like the assurance factor of it all.  He’s here.

Broom (1)In the recent series with the Twins, whom we just completed a sweep of, Mark Teixeira had definitely been there offensively.  The Yanks have gotten offensive production from others besides Tex as well.  A-Rod has hit two homers in the series.  Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon continue to tear it up at the plate.  Everyone is contributing and that is a huge key to this team’s success.  The pitching has been stellar during this winning streak as well.  That’s the bigger of the keys.  The starting pitching has been excellent and the bullpen, when needed, has pulled through.  With all of these key components of the Yankees’ team running smoothly, the Yankees could be an extremely dangerous team both offensively and defensively.

The Yanks play the another series at home as they continue their homestand.  Up next is the Orioles who, after a fast start to the season, have fallen off the map in the AL East standings.  The first game is today at 7 ET when CC Sabathia takes the bump against Brad Bergeson.  CC definitely has the advantage in terms of what he can bring, but Bergeson and the Orioles have been a thorn in the Yankees, not to mention a lot of other teams’, side.  Whenever we play them, I always think right off the bat, “Well we’re playing the O’s.  Should be an easy series.”  But then I rethink it and come up with something like this.  “The O’s do have a tendency to cause havoc against obviously more talented teams.  They’ll probably steal one game from us and if we don’t be carefull, they may get more than that.”

Hopefully the Yanks can keep up this winning streak because I know they are more than capable of going longer with this winning streak.  The only question to me is, do they know they can.  They have the talent, they have the momentum…but do they have the state of mind.  I think they do but they will have to focus in on it to keep up this hot streak.

Our current record is 21-17.  We are in third place and are only one game behind the second place Red Sox.  We are 4.5 back of the Jays who are in first so the first place spot is not out of reach at all.  As a matter of fact, the Jays and Sox are starting a series tonight.  So I’m rooting for the Red Sox (wow, never thought I’d say that) to beat the Jays.  This will help us get closer to the top if we continue to win.  Then all we’ll have to do is beat the Sox.  (Sox have beaten us 5 games to 0 this season.)  Let’s Go Yanks!

Why Fantasy Baseball Is Killing Baseball

Recently, I was talking with my frienda about a bunch of different things.  Here were some of te topics we discussed:

  • The Celtics have no chance at going to the Conference Finals.
  • The Yanks are on fire.  The Sox aren’t.
  • We both hate our biology teacher.

After talking about some of these things for a while, we turned on the tube to see if anything was on.  As usual, we found our way to ESPN where we were reading the small recaps of the MLB games from the day before.  When the score of a certain game came up, my buddy was all excited and said, “Ooh, Ooh.  I need to read this. I’ve got like three guys from this team on my fantasy squad.”  He waited and saw that all three players had good games the day before.  He was all excited and was so eager to go online to see his current standings.  While this went on, I was just sitting there thinking, “Are you serious dude.  C’mon.  You can’t honestly say fantasy baseball is the only reason you pay attention to baseball.”  Well, I was wrong.

Fantasy baseball… it’s a fun game.  Fun to manage your own baseball team and make the decisions like the big league managers do.  It’s fun… but it’s not the reason I, and many other fans, are into baseball.  We love it because it’s an awesome game. Don’t get caught sitting around you’re computer going, “Oh I won this week.”

When I was growing up, I was taught baseball by my dad, and have loved the game ever since.  I have grown to pay more attention to it and have grown to know more about the players and the teams.  It’s a great thing… baseball that is.

When my friend was so pumped about his fantasy squad doing well, I was really starting to think how many people really only pay attention to baseball for a little game.  Yeah it’s a fun game, but to all of you who this applies to… YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE MISSING!

Baseball is a great game.  Fantasy baseball is a great game to play, don’t get me wrong.  But if you really want to be considered a baseball fan, you can’t be heard saying anything like this.

  • Oh well, my favorite team lost, but my fantasy players did well.
  • Dad hold on, I have to see how my fantasy team did this week.
  • Five more minutes, I’m checking my fantasy stuff.
  • Fantasy baseball is life.

Seriously, to any of you out there that might say these things constantly… get a life.  And involve baseball in it, the way it’s supposed to be involved in your life.  Not as a “game”, but as a GAME

Keeping Up

It’s hard being a Yankee fan and living in the Boston area.  The biggest reason: Yankee games are never on t.v.  The only way I can keep up with them are from following ESPN’s Sportscenter, my fantasy baseball information, and basically anything I can find on the radio.  Luckily for me, I came home around lunch time this afternoon and turned on the t.v. and found the Yankees- Twins game on TBS.  For the first time since, well…probably since the first game at the new Yankee Stadium, I was able to watch the game on t.v. and actually know what went on without finding it out from somewhere else.  What a game it was, too.

The Breakdown

BurnettAJ Burnett took the bump against Kevin Slowey today.  It was set to be a great matchup.  And that’s exactly what it was.  These two pitchers exemplified a perfect pitching dual into the later part of the game.  Both only allowed a few hits but no runs were scored through the sixth inning.  When the seventh rolled around, things changed… dramatically.

The Yankees sent Burnett back out to try and continue his outstanding performance on the mound.  Unfortunately, that’s not how things went.  Burnett let guys onto first and second.  Matt Tolbert then singled in Carlos Gomez who was on second.  This broke the scoreless game for both teams.  The inning was not over after this.  The Twins scored another run on a wild pitch from Burnett that scored Jason Kubel.  Burnett was relieved by Jonathon Albaladejo with two outs and he proceeded to strike out Kubel.  The Twins ended the inning with the commanding 2-0 lead.

ARodAt this point in the game, I was thinking, “Well, it was a good game.  Burnett did his best and was out of gas going into the seventh.”  I never thought we would be able to make yet another comeback.  But, surely enough, we did.  A-Rod led off the bottom of the inning and hit a homer to deep left.  This cut the lead in half and all of a sudden, the Yanks were right back in it.  The Yanks then played some small ball after a double by Matsui got him into scoring position.  A sac bunt got him over to third and a sac fly got him home and the game was tied.  At that point, I took back what I was thinking back at the middle of the seventh.

In the eighth, the Twins made a scare getting the bases loaded with only one out.  With one out, Brett Tomko relieved Albaladejo and got the final two outs of the inning.  Now remember.  The bases were loaded when Tomko came in.  The third out came from Mark Teixeira who made a HUGE play to keep the game tied.  He dove towards second base and snagged the line drive hit by Denard Span.  He fired it home and got the second out of the inning.  The third out of the game would come on a foul out by Tolbert.

The game was still tied after seven and a half.  The Yankees failed to score in the bottom of the eighth despite getting the bases loaded.  Jeter and Damon singled and A-Rod walked.  With two outs, Hideki Matsui came up looking to break the tie.  While Matsui stepped up to the plate, my dad and I made predictions on how the at-bat would end.  My dad predicted a pop up to short.  I predicted a single to center.  My dad was incorrect in his prediction but unfortunately, I was incorrect as well.  He stuck out and the inning went into the ninth.

Mariano Rivera came out to pitch the ninth despite the tie.  The Yanks hoped Rivera could keep the Twins scoreless and get the Yanks the chane at another late victory.  He did exactly that.  A lead-off hit from Joe Mauer was all the Twins would get.  He struck out one and got three straight outs.

Brett GardnerThe Yankees were unable to get any runs in the bottom of the ninth despite a near walk off (or probably even a RUN off) and the game went into extras again.  The Yanks had Brett Gardner on first after Swisher walked.  Melky Cabrera sacrificed to the pitcher and got Gardner over to first.  With the speedy Gardner on second, any hit would score him.  Francisco Cervelli came in as catcher.  He grounded a sharp liner to the pitcher who snagged it with his glove.  He was unable to hold onto it and it bounced to Mauer who went to throw it to first.  When he realized Brett Gardner had kept on running towards home, he turned around and raced to home to catch Gardner.  Mauer won the race and the out was made.  Cano batted next and flied out.  This ninth inning was exciting but the game went into extras again, making it the second straight game that went into extras for the Yanks.

DamonThe top of the tenth went scoreless for the Twins as Alfredo Aceves relieved Rivera.  He pitched a perfect inning getting one strike out.  He gave the Yanks another chance to win with a walk off hit.  That’s what ended up happening.  After Jesse Crain got Jeter to groundout, Johnny Damon stepped up to the plate and hit the ball where so many so far this season have.  A homer to right field won the game for the Yankees, the third walk off in a row.  An exciting game ended in a way that any baseball fan would appreciate:  A game that goes into extras ends on a walk off homer.

The game was very good on both sides of the ball.  The pitching was fantastic through the sixth inning.  Then the pitching started to fall apart (at least the starters did).  The offenses did their jobs scoring some runs, even though it took them seven innings to do it.  The defense was good.  It was an all around great game.

What an exciting game.  My heart was probably beating twice as fast in some points of the game than it should be normally.  It was a great game and a great way to continue a winning streak.  The Yanks have now won five straight.  But next time guys, please finish the game in regulation and don’t make it more interesting than it needs to be.  I can’t take another late game walk off, although they are great.  Three in a row would be too much.

The Yanks are steadily moving up the standings with this winning streak.  I’ve been keeping an eye out for the Red Sox and Blue Jays’ scores because with every Yanks win and Red Sox and Jays loss, the Yanks move up and the other two move down.  Hopefully we can keep it up

Go Yanks!

Keep On Walking

Alex Rodriguez has only been back in New York for two games and already he has put the Yanks on his back.

The Yanks and Twins went into extras today after yet another comeback by the Yanks.  With the score 4-3 Twins in the eighth, the Yankees incorporated some small ball into the game to get the tying run across the plate.

8th Inning Breakdown:

Hideki Matsui led off the inning as a pinch hitter.  He hit a shot to deep left and got it to one hop the fence for the ground rule double.  The Yanks then pinch ran Ramiro Pena for Matsui to get some speed on the basepath.  Jeter batted next and sacrificed to the pitcher to move Pena over to third.  Next up was Johnny Damon who looked to get Pena home but Damon grounded out to the pitcher.  Great Job Johnny!  Although Damon was unable to get the job done, Mark Teixeira was.  He singled to right and Pena came home to tie the score.  After that, nothing big really happened.  Teixeira moved over to second on a wild pitch.  There was a pitching change.  Rodriguez walked.  And Swish flew out to right center.

RiveraWith the game tied, the Yanks brought in Mariano Rivera to try and keep the Twins from scoring.  He did just that, like he has so many times in the past, and gave the Yanks the oppertunity to walk off with the win.  Unfortunately, the Yanks couldn’t muster up a run in the bottom of the ninth and the game went into extras.

The game was scoreless in the tenth but the eleventh was when everything happened.  Rivera was kept into the game for the tenth and let up two singles in a row to start off the inning.  But he settled down to get three straight outs.  The Yanks went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the tenth and game continued.  Alfredo Aceves relieved Rivera for the eleventh and pitched a perfect inning getting the Twins down 1-2-3.  The Yankees came up for the bottom of the inning and had the heart of the order coming up.  Teixeira walked to lead off the inning and then, Alex Rodriguez came up to the plate.  Only the second game he has played in NY and he is already put in a big position.  And did he come up big here.  And I mean BIG!  A walk off jack to left gave the Yanks the win, their fourth in a row and put himself back into the role of one of the biggest offensive players for the Yanks.

During this streak, the Yanks have played great all around.  The offense has been running well and the pitching… I don’t believe I’m gonna say this… has been good too.  Hopefully this keeps up and we can continue this streak.  Thumbs up guys!

The Red Sox lost again and the Yanks are steadily moving up in the AL East standings.  Keep it up Yanks!

Youngsters Get It Done

Not much time to write anything here but I’ll get as much in as I can.

Brett Gardner electrified the crowd with an inside the park home run, the first in the new Yankee Stadium.  This homer got the crowd into it and started what would be a five run rally for the Yanks who would end the game on a Melky Cabrera walk off single.

Phil Hughes started the game and failed to keep the Twins offense at bay over his five innings.  Hughes ended the game giving up six hits, two for homers, three runs, and four walks.  Jonathon Albaladejo came in to replace Hughes and pitched a great inning.  He gave up only a walk and struck out two.  Phil Coke and Brett Tomko combined to pitch the seventh giving up one run (Coke) on a homer.  Tomko then pitched for the first out of the eighth and handed the ball to Edwar Ramirez who finished the inning and completed 1.1 innings with two walks and two K’s.  Jose Veras came in to finish the game off and got a strikeout in his .1 inning performance.

Derek Jeter homered to give the Yanks their first run of the game.  Gardner hit the inside the parker in the seventh to get things going.  The game ended on a walk off single by another youngster, Melky Cabrera, who drove in the winning run.  Mark Teixeira went 2-4 with a walk and had a good game at the plate.  A-Rod walked a bunch of times to help out in his first game at the new Yankee Stadium.  The game was a success and the Yanks now have a three game winning streak.

Hopefully we can keep this up.  Go Yanks!

“Godzilla” Comes Through For Yanks

Yanks win, Yanks win!  Read all about it.

When Hideki Matsui signed with the New York Yankees from Japan, everyone in New York and the rest of the baseball community expected him to continue his “monstrous” play that earned him the nickname “Godzilla.”  In Japan, he was one of the most deadly batters that could ever step into the batter’s box.  Unfortunately, that “monstrous” play has not been with him all that much since signing with the Yanks.

His first couple of seasons were good with respectable numbers.  But the “Godzilla” we aquired from Japan wasn’t present.  It was just Hideki Matsui, a GOOD baseball player.  He wasn’t all that at the plate and wasn’t filling the highlight reel with great defensive play in the outfield.  He was just an all around average player.  Too bad, because he was really good when he was in Japan.

Yesterday, “Godzilla” showed up in the eight inning to help the Yanks pull ahead of the first place Jays.  He hit a homer to break the 2-2 tie that the Yankees forced after scoring a run in the seventh inning.  This homer led the Yanks to the 3-2 victory and the 2-1 victory in the series.

CC got the call for the start against Brian Tallet who went for Toronto.  CC did his job to keep the Jays offense at bay and went eight strong innings giving up only two runs on five hits and four walks.  Again, the Yankees’ pitching gave up too many free passes for my liking, but he still got the job done and that’s really all that matters.  Sabathia also struck out five in his terrific performance.  When Sabathia was pulled after the eighth, Mariano Rivera came in to close things out and he ended the game the same way he has done it for so many years.  He pitched the whole ninth giving up nothing.  He also struck out one guy.

The offense also did their job to support the pitching by scoring on the Jays early.  With the 1-0 lead, CC went until the fourth when he gave up a homer to Alex Rios.  The offense then scored again in the seventh to tie the game at 2 apiece (the Jays scored a run in the fifth as well).  Then in the eighth, “Godzilla” pulled through for the clutch homer to give the Yankees the lead and the victory.   It was a great game all around.

Even the defense was great.  That throw by Gardner to get whoever that was going home out was amazing.  I didn’t know he could throw like that.  I knew he had some kind of arm (better than Johnny Damon) but I didn’t know it was that good.  Sure it took a couple bounces but it was right on line and got the job done.

The Yanks got two victories over the Jays in this series and that was huge.  This moves the Jays down in the standings and moves the Yanks up.  The Angels have also helped us out by beating the Red Sox two straight times.  Yesterday, it took them twelve innings to do it but they got it done.

The Yanks are still 4.5 games down, but it’s better than being ten games down.  Since the Yanks were already so many games down in the standings before the Jays series, it seems like we haven’t gone anywhere.  But when you think about it.  4.5 games out isn’t nearly as bad as 10.  It’s a lot easier to get out of a 4.5 game hole than a 10 game hole.

Next up is the Minnesota Twins.  In the opener, we’ve got Phil Hughes, who will hopefully bounce back from a couple tough games, going against one of the better Twins pitchers, Francisco Liriano.  Go Yanks!

-Dillon

King of the Hill

Burnett vs Halladay was a great opening game matchup for the Yanks and Jays.  Unfortunately, Halladay got the better of the Yanks and pitched a gem.  Burnett pitched well too but gave up a few runs and ended up getting the loss.  Of course, he didn’t get any run support from the offense but we know, you don’t really need any of that right…?!?!?

Yesterday’s game was a sight for sore eyes.  We had Andy Pettitte go out against Scott Richmond who is another young guy that is having a surprisingly good season.  He was 4-1 going into yesterday.  Key word- WAS.  Pettitte pitched pretty well.  He only gave up four hits on the day giving up two runs (1 earned).  He did give up four walks.  My advice to MR. Pettitte… find the strikezone more often.  Don’t give ‘em free bases.  He was able to find the zone on a couple of at bats as he struck out two in the game.

The Yanks offense jumped on Richmond in the second and chased him from the game not letting him finish the second.  Brett Gardner led the offense yesterday with two hits including a two run shot, his first of his career.  Way to go Brett!  He also walked once, had three RBI’s and two runs scored.  Johnny Damon, Mark Teixeira, and Robby Cano also pitched in two hits each with four RBI’s and four runs among them.  A-Rod got on three times, all by walks, but the Yanks couldn’t tdo anything with him on and he was stranded all three times.

Overall, the game was a success.  The pitching was good and was able to hold the Jays to two runs.  The bullpen only sent Alfredo Aceves and Jonathon Albaladejo out to the mound to pitch three total innings.  Aceves pitched two and gave up only one hit and had a K.  Albaladejo pitched one inning allowing a hit and two walks but no runs.  I didn’t go to be feeling extremely disappointed about the performance of the bullpen.  Way to go guys.  With the win, I think it’s safe to say we are close to being the King of the Hill.

The victory puts us just one game closer to the top of the AL East.  The loss for the Jays puts them one game down in the standings.  Its a typical in-division series.  Win and you go up in the standings, lose you go down.

Yanks win wasn’t the only good news that found its way to my ears yesterday.  The Angels pulled through for me and beat the Red Sox 8-4.  Mike Napoli and Torii Hunter went yard in the cause and the result was the Red Sox went down a game in the standings.  Overall it was a win-win day for the Yanks.  We went up a game in the standings, and both the Jays and Sox went down.  Just one more step up the ladder for the Yanks.  Hopefully we can keep it going.

My final thoughts:

Tough luck Ryan Zimmerman on your hitting streak being over.  It’s all right.  You don’t need to feel bad.  You’re on the Nationals.  Any hit streak of over five games is something worth celebrating.  Too bad the hitting streak really didn’t help you guys.  The Nats were still down at the bottom of the NL East standings during the streak.

Congrats again to Brett Gardner who hit his first career shot yesterday.

The Roger Clemens story is starting to get old.  Who’s telling the truth.  Clemens, who insists he didn’t take steroids or human growth hormones and wasn’t given them by his trainer Brian McNamee.  Or is it McNamee who is telling the truth.  He insists he gave “the Rocket” steroids and HGH.  Ugh would one of you just fess up already.  It’s getting old.

The Dodgers are doing all right without Manny.  I didn’t think they would go totally downhill withouth him but they aren’t doing that bad.  They are definitely going to miss the long ball aspect of the game he excelled at but hey, what can you do about it now.

Go Yanks!
