Nine Straight But Not All is Well in NY
Joba Chamberlain was set to start against the Orioles in the series finale against Adam Eaton. Joba’s outing was definitely shorter than he expected it to be.

Joba’s and Aubrey Huff’s fist pumping debate was the least of Joba’s problems. After striking out Brian Roberts, Adam Jones, who has been hot at the plate, came up to bat. He hit a sharp liner back to the mound. It hit off Joba’s leg right above his knee. He recovered and got the ball to first for the out. After the play, Joba bent over in pain as he tried to shake it off. He stayed in the game until a double by Aubrey Huff got him taken out of the game. Ironic, huh? When he was going to back up the play, he was in obvious pain as he ran with a limp. Girardi took him out of the game so that he wouldn’t be hurt anymore.
The x-rays on Joba’s knee came back negative, so that’s good news. The soreness in his knee isn’t anything too serious so there is nothing to worry about. He might be out of action until the soreness goes down, but he should be back soon.
On another note, the Yanks continued their winning streak and got their ninth win in a row. Robby Cano had a big game offensively. He went 3-4 with a two run homer, a double, and a single. He was a triple short of the cycle. He had three total RBI’s. He scored two runs. And he ultimately led this offense to the victory. But Cano wasn’t the only player to have a good game at the plate. Big Tex went 2-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Melky went 1-4 with two RBI’s. The only players not to get a hit were A-Rod, who was extremely silent in the game, Francisco Cervelli, and Brett Gardner.
The bullpen had to come in very early to replace Joba. When I learned of this, I was hoping so much that they would be able to continue to play well and keep the O’s at bay. They did exactly that. Alfredo Aceves was the first to come in. He has been the most consistent and successful pitcher out of the ‘pen during this streak. Really all this season. He pitched great. 3.1 innings giving up three hits, a walk, and striking out one. He got the win in the game.
When Aceves came out, Jonathon Albaladejo came in. After a relatively good start to the season, Albaladejo has had some problems of late. Yesterday was a good example of this. He went 2.1 innings giving up five hits, two for homers (Roberts, Markakis), and gave up four runs. This is all the O’s would get but nontheless, it was a disappointing performance from Albaladejo. On the bright side of things, he did strike out two.
Jose Veras relieved Albaladejo and went 1.2 innings giving up only two hits. Nothing else. Veras is starting to come around in the bullpen and it has and will be huge if he can continue to pitch like this.
Rivera came in after Veras to close out the game. He did it in perfect fashion giving up nothing and taking down one guy by way of the K. Rivera’s ninth save of the season comes in the Yankees’ ninth win in a row. Interesting.
Joba’s injury is obvioulsy a concern but the good thing is that he won’t be out for too long. We have to keep an eye on it but there isn’t too much to worry about.
The Red Sox completed their sweep of the Jays which helped us immensely. We are now only 1.5 games back of first. We are 1 game behind the Sox. This winning streak has been huge for the team and has gotten us well into the race for the top of the AL East. Let’s keep it up.

Interleague play starts today. We are set to play the defending champs Phillies. The Philles have been playing some good ball of late so it should be a good matchup. The Yanks look to continue their streak and I look to continue enjoying Yankees baseball. It’s so much easier rooting for a team that wins a lot than doing so for a team that loses a lot (like the Nats). But just so you all know, the Nats did beat the Pirates yesterday.
It’s gonna be Burnett vs. Brett Myers in the interleague opener. Burnett has looked good and hopefully he can keep it up. We need a good performance from him against the powerful Phillis offense.

Eight Straight
Eight Straight, that’s the magical phrase going through my mind right now. The Yanks got their eighth straight win last night with a win over the O’s, 11-4. Robby Cano was one of three who went deep in a row during last night’s game. More on that later. Phil Hughes got back into his rythem on the mound. He struck out nine in five innings. And once again, as I’ve been saying every day during this streak, the Yanks are just playing all around great baseball.
In the second inning, Jeremy Guthrie tried to keep the Yanks’ offense at bay after allowing one run in the bottom of the first. Obviously, that idea didn’t work out too well for him. Sorry Guthrie. The Yanks hit back to back to back jacks.

Man the stadium must have been going wild. I would if I was there. Nick Swisher was the first to take one for a ride. Robby Cano hit one after him and Melky hit another after Cano. The stands were full of action and applause for the Yanks as they took a 4-1 lead. They definitely had something to be proud of.
Some more offense came from Tex and Jeter who both doubled. Kevin Cash also pitched in, despite going 0 for 3, with an RBI.
The pitching looked good. Phil Hughes, after a couple so-so starts, definitely had it going. He had a dominant fastball which seemed to leave the O’s offense dumbfounded. He stuck out nine in his five inning performance. He only gave up six hits, two on homers, and one walk. I would have liked it if Hughes could’ve gone an inning or two more, but we’ll take what we got since we still won the game. Alfredo Aceves continued his masterful pitching going two innings allowing two hits and getting two guys down by way of the K. Phil Coke kept in stride with .2 of an inning worth of work giving up one hit and walking none. Mariano Rivera came in to close things out a little earlier than usual, but not extremely rare. He came in for the four out save. He got it despite giving up a homer to Adam Jones.
The Yankees winning streak is now at eight and is hopefully not stopping soon. I am going to continue to say that the Yanks have the capability of going on a ten game winning streak, or even longer. They have the offense, they have the defense, and the pitching is starting to come around fully. With all the weapons we have, I should expect nothing less of them right now than to play well.
Tex has been on fire lately. Alfredo Aceves had been a big help in the ‘pen. CC has picked it up in front of the home crowd. The managing and coaching has been great. Let’s keep it up. We’re still moving up in the standings and that’s what we need.
Go Yanks!

Second Inning Slaughter
Eight runs in the second inning did Phil Hughes in and ultimately, the Yankees’ chance at victory. The second game of the series between the Yanks and O’s ended in failure for the Yankees. The final score was 12-5.

Phil Hughes took the mound, well… not for long. He gave up eight runs on eight hits and two walks. He didn’t get anyone to go down by way of the K and his day was done after 1.2 innings. The second inning was what did him in. He gave up a three run jack to Aubrey Huff which was just the three of the runs they scored in the second inning slaughter. When Joe Girardi came out to take the ball and pass it on to Edwar Ramirez, my first thoughts were, okay, maybe Ramirez can stop this. Yeah right. He was just as bad. He gave up three runs in a 3.1 inning performance. He gave up two homers to Markakis and Montanez. It was just terrible.

Although much of the blame for the loss yesterday can go to the pitching, the offense didn’t do much to help out. Four of the five runs came on homers from Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira, and Johnny Damon. The final run came on a Nick Swisher hit. Overall, it was a really disappointing game. The Orioles’ Adam Eaton didn’t have a great performance but the Orioles offense was able to support him with so many runs. The Yanks were able to get to him but the Orioles were able to get to Hughes more. In case any of you are wondering, I’m shaking my head right now.
In any MLB game, a two hit game would be a successful game for most players. The Orioles had four guys with three hits in the game. Usually when you have that many people with that many hits, the game went into extras. This game didn’t. It just proves even more how bad the pitching was. Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Luke Scott, and Greg Zaun all had three hit games. Lou Montanez had two hits in the game and the only guys to not have a hit in the game were Brian Roberts (0-4) and Cesar Izturis (0-3). The pitching was dreadful overall and it needs to improve if the Yankees are going to go anywhere this season.
With the loss yesterday, The Yanks have slipped into fourth place behind the Rays. The only team worse than us in the division, currently, is the Orioles. And we’re not even beating them. Man!
I just hope we can pull it together because it is extremely hard rooting for a team that doesn’t win. I’m used to rooting for the Celtics, who have recently been good. I root for the Patriots, who are one of the best teams in the NFL. Now the Bruins are good and I root for them too. The Yankees are my other team and they are playing terrible. Ughh!
Let’s pick it up Yanks!

Standing O
I can’t say enough about how phenominal the Yankees played yesterday against the Orioles. CC pitched absolutely stellar and the offense was able to get on base and score. It was fabulous. I loved it. It was one of the greatest performances on the season for the Yanks.

Smiles all around. CC Sabathia pitched a complete game and only gave up four hits and a walk. Obviously his best performance of the season, it was good to see him pitch well. If only he could have done it in front of the loyal Yankee crowd. He only gave up four hits. Two to Brian Roberts and one to Adam Jones and Cesar Izturis. Another great thing about yesterday’s game is that the bullpen didn’t blow it. Sabathia went the distance so there was no need for the bullpen. It was awesome.

The offense had a good game too. They were able to get seven hits off Guthrie including the highlight of the game. Alex Rodriguez’s first at bat of the season. The first pitch he saw he cranked out to deep left. His first homer of the season. It shocked the baseball community, after all he’s gone through so far recently but it was great to see him get it. Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera both had two hits in the game. Johnny Damon had a hit and an RBI in the game as well.
It was an all around great game. One of the best for the Yanks on the season. Yeah it was against the Orioles but it was still a great performance and they got the win.

The Yanks play two more agaisnt the O’s. Today we’ve got Phil Hughes against Adam Eaton. Hughes has had one good game and one okay game on the season in his two starts. Hopeully we can get a good game from him today. Go Yanks!
