Eight Straight
Eight Straight, that’s the magical phrase going through my mind right now. The Yanks got their eighth straight win last night with a win over the O’s, 11-4. Robby Cano was one of three who went deep in a row during last night’s game. More on that later. Phil Hughes got back into his rythem on the mound. He struck out nine in five innings. And once again, as I’ve been saying every day during this streak, the Yanks are just playing all around great baseball.
In the second inning, Jeremy Guthrie tried to keep the Yanks’ offense at bay after allowing one run in the bottom of the first. Obviously, that idea didn’t work out too well for him. Sorry Guthrie. The Yanks hit back to back to back jacks.

Man the stadium must have been going wild. I would if I was there. Nick Swisher was the first to take one for a ride. Robby Cano hit one after him and Melky hit another after Cano. The stands were full of action and applause for the Yanks as they took a 4-1 lead. They definitely had something to be proud of.
Some more offense came from Tex and Jeter who both doubled. Kevin Cash also pitched in, despite going 0 for 3, with an RBI.
The pitching looked good. Phil Hughes, after a couple so-so starts, definitely had it going. He had a dominant fastball which seemed to leave the O’s offense dumbfounded. He stuck out nine in his five inning performance. He only gave up six hits, two on homers, and one walk. I would have liked it if Hughes could’ve gone an inning or two more, but we’ll take what we got since we still won the game. Alfredo Aceves continued his masterful pitching going two innings allowing two hits and getting two guys down by way of the K. Phil Coke kept in stride with .2 of an inning worth of work giving up one hit and walking none. Mariano Rivera came in to close things out a little earlier than usual, but not extremely rare. He came in for the four out save. He got it despite giving up a homer to Adam Jones.
The Yankees winning streak is now at eight and is hopefully not stopping soon. I am going to continue to say that the Yanks have the capability of going on a ten game winning streak, or even longer. They have the offense, they have the defense, and the pitching is starting to come around fully. With all the weapons we have, I should expect nothing less of them right now than to play well.
Tex has been on fire lately. Alfredo Aceves had been a big help in the ‘pen. CC has picked it up in front of the home crowd. The managing and coaching has been great. Let’s keep it up. We’re still moving up in the standings and that’s what we need.

King Of Bronx

The King of Queens Bronx. That’s right. The Yanks are the King of the Bronx. The Yankees extended their winning streak to seven games. A-Rod and Teixeira both went yard. CC pitched a gem. And the Yanks just keep rolling along.

CC took the bump against rookie O’s pitcher Brad Bergesson. Both teams jumped on the opposing pitcher early. The O’s started off the game with one run in the first. Then the Yanks took the lead on a two run homer by A-Rod in the bottom of the inning. The game then went scoreless until the seventh when the Yanks exploded for seven runs off a combined force of Bergesen, Chris Ray, and Mark Hendrickson. By this point, the game was clearly over. The Yanks continue their offensive hot streak and the pitching continues to be stellar. The winning streak is now seven and it doesn’t look like it’s gonna be stopping any time soon. The Yanks are on fire and are now starting to look like the Yankees everyone expected they would be at the beginning of the season.
Now, when you thought the Yanks were on fire and couldn’t get any better, you realize they have a ton of guys on the DL. One of those guys was Brian Bruney who the Yanks just reactivated. This makes the road to Rivera so much easier. Bruney has proven to be the best and most reliable reliever, other than Rivera, in the ‘pen since Joba left to the starting rotation. When we lost him to the DL, everyone thought the bullpen was going to be in terrible trouble. Well, we were right, but that was before. Now we have Bruney back and he will ultimately help our team.
The emergence of Francisco Cervelli has been equally huge. With Posada and Molina on the DL, we have a youngster that has been able to fill in and do a respectable great job. Cervelli has been solid behind the plate so far since being called up and his bat has been a huge bonus no one expected to be here. I’ll take great D behind the plate AND good offense any day. It’s a huge bonus and it’s just another weapon the Yanks have in this all of a sudden hot offense.
We play two more agaisnt Baltimore before interleague play starts and we play the defending champs, the Phillies. We’ve got Phil Hughes tonight against the O’s ace, Jeremy Guthrie.
The Yanks are still moving up in the standings. Our record is 22-17 and we are only 3.5 games back of the Jays. Yesterday, the Red Sox beat the Jays 2-1. This helps the Yanks because the Jays’ lead over both teams is shortened. If the Sox continue to beat the Jays, the Jays will only lead by a couple games at the end of the series. With the way the Yanks have been playing, they should have no problem keeping up now that we have gotten into the race again.
Go Yanks… and Red Sox (ughhh I hate saying that).

Standing O
I can’t say enough about how phenominal the Yankees played yesterday against the Orioles. CC pitched absolutely stellar and the offense was able to get on base and score. It was fabulous. I loved it. It was one of the greatest performances on the season for the Yanks.

Smiles all around. CC Sabathia pitched a complete game and only gave up four hits and a walk. Obviously his best performance of the season, it was good to see him pitch well. If only he could have done it in front of the loyal Yankee crowd. He only gave up four hits. Two to Brian Roberts and one to Adam Jones and Cesar Izturis. Another great thing about yesterday’s game is that the bullpen didn’t blow it. Sabathia went the distance so there was no need for the bullpen. It was awesome.

The offense had a good game too. They were able to get seven hits off Guthrie including the highlight of the game. Alex Rodriguez’s first at bat of the season. The first pitch he saw he cranked out to deep left. His first homer of the season. It shocked the baseball community, after all he’s gone through so far recently but it was great to see him get it. Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera both had two hits in the game. Johnny Damon had a hit and an RBI in the game as well.
It was an all around great game. One of the best for the Yanks on the season. Yeah it was against the Orioles but it was still a great performance and they got the win.

The Yanks play two more agaisnt the O’s. Today we’ve got Phil Hughes against Adam Eaton. Hughes has had one good game and one okay game on the season in his two starts. Hopeully we can get a good game from him today. Go Yanks!

Two Late Game Homers Boost Rays Over Yanks

Evan Longoria continued is having a great season offensively and it definitely showed yesterday when he hit a solo blast off Mariano Rivera to give the Rays a one point lead. Later in the inning, Carl Crawford hit a solo homer to put the Rays up two. This one was also off Rivera. Rivera obviously didn’t have his stuff as he took the loss as the Rays won the game 8-6. It didn’t help Rivera that the offense was unable to get anything off Joe Nelson who came in to close the game out for the Rays. Once again, the Yankees show that they can’t seem to come away with a win. They play relatively well the whole game, they come back to tie the game late, and… the pitching blows it and the offense can’t save them. Too bad.
It’s getting kind of annoying to keep havnig to talk about my Yankees like this. As much as a I love them, I hate to rant about them. But until they start winning consistently, there’s nothing else to do but rant. Ughhh!

Andy Pettitte started the game for the Yanks and gave up nine hits, including four homers, one walk and gave up five runs in his six innings of work. He also finished with five homers. Jose Veras then came in to pitch two innings. In his time on the mound, he gave up two hits, a walk and one run. After the Yanks came back to score two runs in the eighth to tie it up, Mariano Rivera came in to try and keep the game tied….. too bad he didn’t have his stuff. He gave up two homers which blew the game for the Yanks. Dave Robertson came in to try and end the scoring for the Rays and got the only batter he faced out. The Yanks couldn’t respond on the offensive side and the Rays came out victorious and the Yanks went into the locker rooms with their heads down and sad about the loss… again.

On the offensive up side, Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon both homered in the game. Damon ended the game with four hits and four RBI’s. He had a great game. Derek Jeter had two hits and a run scored. Other than these guys, the offense was quiet. They really need to pick it up for them to start winning. Johnny Damon has had a great season so far and is still going strong but others like Mark Teixeira who has been on and off need to get going. It’s a good thing A-Rod is coming back today against the Orioles.

Andy Pettitte’s performance was not great but it wasn’t all that bad either. He got knocked around for four homers which is never a fun thing to watch as a Yankee fan. but nontheless, it happened. Don’t like to see it but I have to get over it.
The Yanks are going farther and farther down in the division. The Blue Jays lost yesterday which would be good news if we had won. But the Red Sox demolished the Indians in the sixth inning scoring twelve. I was watching that game on t.v. and it seemed like the Indians still had a chance at victory since they weren’t doing too bad. But then Jason Bay hit a three runs blast and I new that it was just the start of a huge inning. It turned out to be REALLY HUGE!
The Yanks head to Camden Yards to face the O’s tonight. The headline story in that game will most likely be the return of A-Rod. With his offense in dear need and his image smudged by a marker named steroids, it will definitely be an interesting night. Hopefully the Yanks can pull it out. They’ve got CC going out agaisnt the O’s ace, Jeremy Guthrie who has some pretty good stuff.

In other news from the AL East, the Rays head off to Boston for a series with the hot Red Sox. They’ve got a pitching matchup of Brad Penny and James Shields.

A Kick In the Butt
Honestly, I expected better from the Yanks on opening day. All the energy and the hype was missing in the Yanks opening day loss to the Orioles. C.C. Sabathia definitely didn’t have his ‘A’ game as he walked five, gave up eight hits, let in six runs, and, get this… didn’t strikeout anyone. That is very rare. Sabathia just didn’t have his stuff and the result… he got rocked. But he wasn’t the only new star that struggled. Mark Teixeira came up to the plate four times to the boos of the Orioles crowd for not choosing to play for the Orioles but instead going to New York. My reaction to the boos- get over it. Next time, offer more money and you may just get the best player. As Teixeira received the boos, he got on base only once with a walk but didn’t have any hits. Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon had five hits combined to lead the offense. Matsui and Posada each homered to drive in three runs total but other than that, the offense was very quiet against the good pitching from Jeremy Guthrie. I tip my hat to Guthrie for pitching a good game. Unfortunately, he pitched a good game against the Yankees. When Sabathia left the game, the lead was only four. The Yankees brought Albaladejo in to try and stop the offense of the Orioles. He pitched well and kept the Yanks in the game as they closed in on the Orioles’ lead. Unfortunately, the rest of the Yankees bullpen stunk. They let up four runs after Albaladejo came out and the Yankees were down in the dumps again. Overall, the Yankees just didn’t have it. They got some unlucky breaks like when Xavier Nady was caught too far off the bag on a Derek Jeter single up the middle that was stopped by Izturis. Nady got thrown out at third. And don’t even get me started on that homer by Izturis that Damon should have caught. The fan clearly interfered when Damon had the shot to catch it and the umpires made the wrong call. That just killed me. I hope the Yankees can pull it together offensively on Wednesday when they have Wang take the mound. I think Wang is going to have a solid year sitting at the front end of this great rotation. As long as he stays healthy, which he is right now, he should be great. He is going to need the offensive run support to help him get through the game. If the offense and pitching picks up maybe I won’t be kicking myself in the butt for staying on the couch watching the Yankees lose. Every time they lose I feel like it was a waste of time. I understand that we’re not going to win every game, but I would sure like it if they didn’t lose every game either. Hopefully they’ll bring it Wednesday.
